Sri Lanka’s apparel sector which contributes 6% to the country’s GDP and accounting for more than 52% of the total export earnings and provides direct employment to 350,000 workers and an additional 700,000 receiving livelihood opportunities as part of the larger supply chain. However , we are faced with stiff competition from neighboring markets such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia and Phillipines, and even Vietnam, Cambodia and some African markets like Ethiopia and Kenya.
The current global trend shows a revenue increase in the Apparel and Leather segment in the forthcoming years ,depending on individual sustainability, skilled labor connected with corporate social responsibility and transparency influenced by the technology on production processes, sales and the relationships between buyers, suppliers and consumers. Computer aided design systems have also helped in circulating new and latest fashions across the globe. These advancements in technology and flexible strategies like product differentiation of the apparel industries enable them to meet the growing competition and offer fashionable garments at an acceptable cost.
